Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End

Book Summary:

 

Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End is physician Atul Gawande’s poignant reflection on his professional experience, research, and life lessons on aging, death, and dying. His discussion focuses on the development of the United States healthcare system and the treatment of older adults as impacted by increased longevity and advanced medical interventions.  He also presents a history and the socio-economic implications of assisted living, skilled nursing, and hospice care programs.  While he primarily discusses the U.S. healthcare system, he also presents alternative cultures and systems. Gawande believes that “the end matters” and he encourages readers to live life to the fullest until the very end. 

 

Dr. Gawande has written four bestselling and highly regarded book about medical issues.  He is also a surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, a staff writer for The New Yorker, and a professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. He has won the Lewis Thomas Prize for Writing about Science, a MacArthur Fellowship, and two National Magazine Awards.
