Virtual Ecopsychology SIG
Saturday, March 25, 2023, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM PDT
Category: Special Interest Groups

Welcome to LACPA’s new special interest group (SIG)—Ecopsychology.

The initial meeting is Saturday, March 25 at 3 PM via Zoom.

Welcome to LACPA’s new special interest group—Ecopsychology, led by Debra Borys and Pamela McCrory via Zoom on Saturday, March 25 at 3 PM. All LACPA members are welcome to join in the discussion about issues and the impact of climate change, sustainability, and related environmental concerns. Guided by attendees’ interests, we will likely include over time both exciting applications in the field for addressing patients’ reactions to environmental issues in therapy as well as psychologist-group members’ own interests and concerns in this area distinct from their practice (e.g., environmental identity, stages in environmental awareness/action, varieties of patient and clinician emotional, social and behavioral reactions to climate change).

We will also explore the social justice issues reflected in the disparate impact of climate change on disadvantaged groups locally and internationally. Active group discussions will be accompanied by resource sharing, speakers, discussion of films and videos on the topic, and readings.

Attendees at the first meeting will have the opportunity to assist in selecting topics to cover throughout the year. In addition, Dr. Thomas Doherty, APA Fellow, and internationally known and published ecopsychologist and ecopsychology innovator, will be our guest for part of the meeting to speak about environmental identity as well as several tools and concepts helpful for therapists and patients in addressing climate distress.

The March and April SIG meetings are open to non-members so feel free to invite a colleague who might be interested in our SIGs and LACPA in general
