LACPA’s Fall Book Club Selection:

My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

Please pay attention to the title and author as there are several books with similar titles.

Book Summary

In My Sister’s Keeper, Jodi Picoult tells us the story of 13-year-old Anna, conceived by her parents to serve in the role of bone marrow donor for her older sister, Kate.  After years of multiple medical procedures to generate treatments for Kate, we find Anna considering the idea of suing her parents for the right to make decisions over her own body.  This careful, thought-provoking exploration of medical ethics and moral dilemmas, written with compassion and sensitivity, is likely to serve as a strong springboard for discussion at the book club meetings.

Picoult writes from multiple viewpoints.  In this manner, she’s able to explore, in greater depth, the internal dynamics of each character.  This style adds a richness to her writing that is compelling.  It creates space for the reader to have compassion towards multiple characters, even when they’re in conflict with each other.  In addition, like many of Picoult’s books, My Sister’s Keeper is meticulously researched so the reader learns much about the issues covered in a very accessible format.

Media Reviews from BookBrowse.com

Picoult writes with a fine touch, a sharp eye for detail, and a firm grasp of the delicacy and complexity of human relationships. The Boston Globe

Told in alternating perspectives by the engaging, fascinating cast of characters, Picoult's novel grabs the reader from the first page and never lets go. This is a beautiful, heartbreaking, controversial, and honest book. Booklist - Kristine Huntley

Picoult's timely and compelling novel will appeal to anyone who has thought about the morality of medical decision making and any parent who must balance the needs of different children. Highly recommended.  Library Journal - Kim Uden Rutter
