Category: Special Interest Groups
Dear LACPA members, Please join the Sexuality and Sex Therapy SIG for our November event! It will take place virtually on Zoom.
Date: Friday, November 14, 2025 Time: 12:00-1:00 p.m. Topic: How Taking a Sexual History Can Unlock a Client’s Past Any professional working in the field of health can benefit from learning how to take a comprehensive sexual history. Sexuality touches on many facets of life that are crucially important to understanding a client’s world. Learning about an individual’s sexuality and sexual history can illuminate their relationship with their physical body, identify trauma, expose shame and distorted self-image, reveal relationship patterns, and open up a window into family dynamics, cultural messaging, and spiritual life. This presentation will offer a framework for taking a sexual history, including creating a proper setting, decision-making during the interview, managing the unexpected, and integrating the results into a coherent clinical approach to the client. Format: Presentation by Dr. Beth Leedham, Ph.D. Beth Leedham, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and certified sex therapist. She has been working in the field of sexuality and quality of life for several decades, and some of her early research on cancer and sexuality still serves as the basis for patient education materials distributed by the National Cancer Institute. Dr Leedham has served as research faculty at UCLA and teaching faculty at the University of Southern California and The Chicago School. She has served on the Board of the California Psychological Association and was in leadership at LACPA for 15 years in a variety of capacities, serving as President in 2017. She maintains a private practice in Encino. She can be found at www.drbethleedham.com.
