Dr. Aydin Olson-Kennedy
Supporting Families Amid an Increasingly Restrictive Landscape of Gender-Affirming Care for Minors This presentation offers therapists a brief overview of the current landscape of gender-affirming care (GAC) for minors at both the national level and within California. The goal is to orient clinicians to how recent and anticipated policy shifts are shaping minors’ access to GAC, intensifying parental fear and anxiety, and clarifying the role mental health providers can play in supporting parents and caregivers within an increasingly restrictive sociopolitical context. Dr. Aydin Olson-Kennedy, LCSW (he/him) is a clinical social worker, educator, and national trainer with more than fifteen years of experience providing therapy, advocacy, and psychoeducation to transgender and non-binary people and their families. A central focus of his clinical work is supporting parents and caregivers of transgender and gender-diverse youth in navigating decision-making and family support within complex clinical and sociopolitical contexts. His work is grounded in anti-oppressive, trauma-informed practices, with a focus on expanding providers’ and parents’ understanding of gender dysphoria, the importance of accessing gender-affirming care, and the need to strengthen systems that support transgender and non-binary youth. Aydin has contributed to multiple publications on gender-affirming clinical practice, anti-oppressive supervision, and gender-related trauma. He regularly partners with nonprofits, schools, healthcare organizations, and community programs to deliver trainings that strengthen providers’ capacity to offer affirming, accountable, and culturally responsive care. "The opinions of presenters, and their approach to psychological issues and interventions, do not represent a formal endorsement of any position by the Los Angeles County Psychological Association, leadership or its members. The opinions, ideas, and concepts expressed are purely those of the presenter."
