Category: Special Interest Groups

Please join us for a virtual Divorce SIG meeting with Dorothy Carfrae, Esq. who will update us on the latest in case law relating to a variety of family matters we may run into in working with our patients.

Dorothy was licensed to practice law in California and the Federal Courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, in 1981.   For 46 years, she has practiced exclusively Family Law, and for 35 years, child advocacy.   She frequently interacts with mental health professionals.

Dorothy gained national attention in the first AIDS-related child custody case in the nation, taking the case from trial through the appellate courts.

She has trained and lectured widely on family and child issues, including before the State Assembly, the State Senate, Judges' training seminars, Family Court Services training, and Minors' Counsel training.

Dorothy wishes to update us on new cases and statutes that may be of interest to us, and to give her perspective as to trends she perceives in decisions being made by current Family Law Judges.   Those topics include:

  • New Joint Petition for Dissolution of Marriage or Domestic Partnership;
  • A strong caution regarding dual and multiple therapeutic roles.   A mere waiver of conflict of interest may not be sufficient;
  • Minors' Counsel as holder of privilege;
  • Resist / Refuse : Fam Code Section 3190 counseling.   How Judges' handling the confusing and conflicting new laws;
  • Domestic Violence: So many changes.  New definitions. Children as protected persons.  Pets are people too for DV protection.
  • Time left for questions and discussion.
