LACPA’s Child and Adolescent SIG welcomes special education attorney Heather Zakson

TopicProtecting and Preserving the Right to Independent Educational Evaluations

Recently, some school districts have made it more difficult for parents of children with special needs to obtain an independent education evaluation.  This presentation will address this critical issues and provide clinicians with recommendations on how to navigate this increasingly difficult terrain.

Presenter: Heather Zakson, Attorney at Law

Heather Zakson is an attorney specializing in special education and disability civil rights, and consultation in family law custody issues involving children with disabilities. She was chosen for the Breaking Education Barriers Award from Learning Rights Law Center and the California Bar Assn Access and Fairness Leadership Academy.  Heather was a Borchard Foundation Fellow at National Senior Citizens Law Center where she worked on disability rights litigation and policy advocacy. She is a graduate of Brandeis University and UCLA School of Law’s Program in Public Interest Law and Policy. Prior to entering private practice, Heather was an education rights attorney at Disability Rights Law Center, and before that, worked in healthcare access, workers’ rights and corporate accountability. Heather is also active in community-based organizing and education efforts with special education students, their parents and allies to improve outcomes for all students.
