In May 2013 Compulsive Hoarding was first defined as a mental disorder in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). Hoarding: An Excavation Beneath the Piles is a workshop designed for professionals and family members affected by people who hoard. 

 

Regina Lark, Ph.D., the founder and owner A Clear Path, LLC,  is a Certified Professional Organizer in Chronic Disorganization (CPO-CD), with certificates in chronic disorganization, ADHD, and compulsive hoarding. She is a Professional Member of the National Speakers’ Association. Dr. Lark works particularly with clients with brain-based conditions. She earned a History Ph.D. from the University of Southern California.

  1. OPENING: 3 minutes
  2. What’s the problem?? (8 minutes)
    1. Collecting vs. “Regular clutter” vs. Chronic Disorganization vs. Hoarding
  3. A brief history of hoarding (5 minutes)
  4. Why, and what, do people hoard? (7 minutes)
    1. Types of hoarding behavior
  5. Clinical and social significance of hoarding (20 minutes)
    1. Statistics
    2. Hoarding in older adults
  6. Look and listen (5 minutes)
    1. Caregivers, family members, first responders
  7. Clutter – Hoarding Scales (6 minutes)
    1. Institute for Challenging Disorganization – 5 levels of recognition
    2. OC Foundation’s “Clutter Image Rating”
  8. The ‘harm-reduction’ model toward providing help (15 minutes)
    1. It takes a village
    2. Developing the plan
  9. Backsliding (5 minutes)
    1. 6 common reasons

Course Goals and Educational Objectives:

1.    Analyze when disorganization becomes chronic disorganization, & chronic disorganization becomes hoarding.
2.    Become familiar with the “Do No Harm” model for helping people who hoard.
3.    Apply best practices to create support system for people who hoard.

Virtual attendance is limited to 100 LACPA members. Should you have a friend or colleague who would like to attend, please have them join LACPA before they send in this registration form. Programs are subject to change. 

The Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. LACPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

This course may be taken to satisfy the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) continuing education requirements.

Those who attend the workshop in its entirety, sign in and out through the Zoom Chat, and complete the evaluation, will receive 1.5 CE credits. CE Certificates will be emailed within two weeks of the program

Please note; that LACPA Student and Post-Doc/Pre-Licensed members are not granted CE Credits.

APA CE rules require that we only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop.

Those who arrive 15 minutes past the start time or leave before the workshop is complete will not receive CE credits.
