People with disabilities are often overlooked in diversity discourse and among mental health providers, and continue to be stigmatized and misunderstood. This presentation will define disability and review clinical considerations. The presentation will address disability as diversity and provide participants tools to empower and advocate for students with disabilities.


 

 

Norma Kehdi, Psy.D., is a staff psychologist and Associate Director of Counseling at the UCLA Center for Accessible Education and works in private practice conducting psychoeducational and psychodiagnostic evaluations, and psychotherapy. She is a certified Learning Disability Specialist in the CCC system. Norma’s specialities include learning disabilities, ADHD, diagnostic assessment, disability among college students, and acculturation and cultural competency.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Janice Schafrik, Ph.D., is training director for the USC Postdoctoral Fellowship in College Student Learning and Support Services, and adjunct professor in the USC Rossier School of Education. Her areas of specialization include neurodivergent college student health and wellness and college student disability performance outcomes. Janice received her Ph.D. in CounselingPsychology from the University of Southern California.

 

 

 

 

  Outline

1. Introduction of presenter(s) and overview of topic (3 mins)
2. Icebreaker (5 mins)
3. Overview of disability (definition, laws, facts, demographics in higher education; 12 minutes)
4. Overview of the theory of disability identity, social conceptualization of disability, and higher education factors influencing development (15 mins)
5. Description of the role of psychologists in supporting students with disabilities (25 mins)

Course Goals and Educational Objectives:

1. Gain knowledge about disability in general and demographics of students with disabilities in higher education.
2. Demonstrate awareness of models of disability, and the role of psychologists in supporting students with disabilities, including ethical dilemmas that impact the therapeutic relationship.
3. Apply counseling considerations and advocacy tools when working with individuals with disabilities including how to generate effective disability documentation and disability disclosure in school and in the workplace.

The Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. LACPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

This course may be taken to satisfy the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) continuing education requirements.

Those who attend the workshop in its entirety, sign in and out through the Zoom Chat, and complete the evaluation, will receive 1.5 CE credits. CE Certificates will be emailed within two weeks of the program

Please note; that LACPA Student and Post-Doc/Pre-Licensed members are not granted CE Credits.

APA CE rules require that we only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop.

Those who arrive 15 minutes past the start time or leave before the workshop is complete will not receive CE credits.
