The LACPA Hiking Club Presents:

A hike off Las Virgenes Canyon Road. The Piuma Trailhead is located at a small parking lot a little south of Malibu Creek State Park and provides a lovely ascent with glorious views of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

The total distance for the hike will be ~ 5 miles and will take approximately 2 1/2 - 3 hours.

Sunday, June 4th at 9:00 AM. Ending time will be between 11:30 and 12:00, depending on the speed and stamina of the group.

Meet at the trailhead (by the Paystation), which is just at the end of the parking lot for this part of the Backbone Trail.

RSVP to Andi Ackerman [email protected]. We wait for those who have RSVP'ed. Please call 818.426.0674 day of the hike if you need help getting there or have changed your mind.

Rating: This hike is rated moderate. Initially the trail is a rocky single-track that ascends quite rapidly for about a mile and then opens up to a wider but still ascending fire road. Beautiful views of the Santa Monica Mountains begin almost immediately, and ever expanding views of the Pacific open up soon thereafter. This trail does not involve any steep drops or edges, but it is rocky in parts and involves pretty continuous moderate uphill hiking. Hiking boots or trail shoes are strongly recommended. The trail is mostly open with limited shade, so sunscreen and a hat are recommended. Water is a must, and a snack for the trail is suggested. We will likely stop to rest, snack and chat at the summit, before returning along the same trail that we came up on.

Directions: From the San Fernando Valley, take the 101 Freeway east or west to Las Virgenes Road. Head west (toward the ocean) on Las Virgenes for approximately 4 miles. You will pass the entrance to Malibu Creek State Park. Do not turn in here. Continue on about another 1/2 mile and watch for a small parking lot on the right side of the road with a sign that says: Malibu Creek State Park, Piuma Trailhead. Pull in and park there. From PCH, head east on Malibu Canyon Road (toward the San Fernando Valley). I don’t know how far it is from PCH to the Piuma Trailhead parking lot, so you will have to watch for it on your left. If you get to the entrance to Malibu Creek State Park, you have gone too far. But, remember that the sign for the parking lot does say Malibu Creek State Park on it - followed by Piuma Trailhead. This trail is part of the parkland but does not begin inside the park itself!

Parking: See the directions above regarding where to park. The fee for parking is $8.00 for the day ($7.00 for seniors). There is now an automated paystation which looks to take only credit card payments. So, be sure to have a credit card available. You can also use a California State Park pass if you have one. If the lot is full there is some additional parking nearby.

More Info.: This is one of my husband’s and my favorite trails. Even if it is overcast and we can’t take in all of the views, it is a beautiful trail and a nice rigorous but not too demanding hike with options to go a little further or quit a little sooner as the group desires.

HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU AND/OR TO SEE YOU THERE!
