AMERICAN FICTION

American Fiction is a 2023 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Cord Jefferson and is based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett. 

The film follows Thelonious “Monk” Ellison,  a writer and professor who is frustrated because his novels receive academic praise but sell poorly because publishers deem them not “Black enough.”  He then uses a pen name to write an outlandish satire of stereotypical "Black" books, only for it to be mistaken for a serious memoir, garnering high sales and critical praise.

The film stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, John Ortiz, Erika Alexander and Leslie Uggams.

American Fiction premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023, where it won the People's Choice Award. It then received numerous accolades: see Wikipedia for complete list. It was named one of the top 10 films of 2023 by the American Film Institute.  The film received five nominations at the Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Jeffrey Wright, Best Supporting Actor for Sterling K. Brown, Best Original Score and won for Best Adapted Screenplay for Cord Jefferson.  Both Cord Jefferson and Jeffrey Wright won Independent Spirit Awards, which were two of the film’s five nominations.
