Law and Ethics Update: What You Need to Know

This course fulfills the ethics requirement mandated every two years for license renewal and 2.5 hours
of the 6.0 hour required suicide training for both the BOP & BBS licensees.

This workshop addresses the therapist responsibility to ensure patient welfare in all aspects of practice. Participants will learn to deal with ethical dilemmas such as (1) the relationship between suicide, social media and substance abuse, (fulfills 2.5 hours of suicide training required by BOP and BBS) (2) Therapist self-care due to counter-transference and burnout; (3) working with diverse children and families and updates to child abuse; (4) handling subpoenas (5) working with multiclient situations and confidentiality and; (6) death with dignity ethical and legal issues. This program reviews the current research findings and knowledge that inform the practice of ethical and legal practice.
Pamela H. Harmell, Ph.D. is a national lecturer specializing in legal and ethical issues in clinical practice. She is a Professor at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology and has written extensively in professional publications on ethical practice and has formally studied law. She is a Past President of the Board of Psychology. Dr. Harmell is former Chair of the California State Ethics Committee and former Chair of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association Ethics Committee. She served on the Board of Directors of the California Psychological Association and is a Past President of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association.

Educational Goals and Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to understand the difference between boundary crossings and boundary violations.
2. Participants will learn common causes burnout and the DOVE model for therapist vulnerability and resilience
3. Participants will become aware of cultural competency when working with minors.
4. Participants will understand the court decisions related to multiclient confidentiality issues
5. Participants will Identify and increase awareness of the connection between suicide, social media and substance abuse.
6. Participants will identify and avoid multiple relationship situations in psychotherapy.
Program, presenter, date, and location are all subject to change.
Cancellation Policy: To receive a refund, a written request must be received the Monday before the scheduled date of the program. Refunds will be processed within 30 days. A $35 processing fee is deducted from all refunds. Should it become necessary to cancel a course, those who have registered will be notified in writing, and the full course fee will be refunded.
It is important to note that APA continuing education rules require that LACPA only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop. An evaluation of the workshop must be completed. Those who arrive more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time or leave before the workshop is completed will not receive CE credit. Partial credit may not be given.
CE Certificates will be sent out via email within two weeks from the program.
The Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.
LACPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
This course may be taken to satisfy the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) continuing education requirements.
