SIG Topic: Supporting Parents/Children Through Changes in Learning Environments

Schools are working harder than ever to attempt to maintain learning given school closures, yet many of our parents and students are struggling to maintain learning and adapt to the new virtual/homeschool format amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Some schools have rolled out half- or full-day virtual programs, which seem to be the most successful among our older and more focused learners; however, the independent work time is still proving to be a challenge for many of our younger and more spirited students. Other schools have provided work packets with little or no structure, which are posing high demands on parents to facilitate homeschool learning. There appears to be low accountability and structure, and parents and students are struggling to adapt. This presentation will address the struggles parents and students are encountering given these novel circumstances, propose strategies to support students and keep them engaged in learning, and discuss how to adapt curricula to meet the needs of diverse learners
