Trauma & Resiliency: A Native Healing Perspective
Saturday, July 18, 2020
10:00 to 11:00 AM via Zoom
FREE 1.0 LIVE CE Credit for both LACPA Members and Non-members
Introductory Level

Presented by Alexis Hamill, Ph.D.

Despite us living and working on Native land, few Americans are aware of the historical or current experiences of those indigenous to this country, nor the impact these experiences can have on mental and physical health. The current pandemic of COVID-19, and ongoing pandemic of racism, provide a lens through which to better recognize these impacts. In this workshop you will learn more about relevant mental health and cultural issues and gain understanding of Native American experiences to support your ability to practice with cultural humility/competence.

Dr. Alexis Hamill received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology with an emphasis in community psychology from Bowling Green State University. She completed her internship in the Los Angeles VA health care system at the Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center and her postdoctoral fellowship at the San Francisco VA. Immediately following postdoc, she began working at the Native American Health Center in Oakland as a licensed psychologist and training program manager. There she developed an internship program and postdoctoral program and has supervised practicum students, interns, postdoctoral fellows, and staff.  She also provides direct care to members, partners with medical providers, and traditional healers, and serves in an administrative capacity. She is now the clinical site lead for clinical behavioral health services.

Attendees will be able to:

Describe Dr. Maria Yellow Horse Brave Heart’s model of Historical Trauma and provide examples.
Analyze the impacts of a health stressor on an under-resourced and marginalized population.
Discuss specific acts of resiliency and community empowerment currently occurring in Native communities.
