LACPA’s Winter Book Club Selection:

How to Be an Antiracist
by Ibram X. Kendi

Book Summary:

In this powerfully written New York Times Bestseller, How to Be an Antiracist, Ibram X. Kendi candidly reveals not only an account of his own experience as an African American living in modern day United States, but also discloses his own struggle as a racist himself.  He explains how we may all be unknowingly subject to racist behavior in some respect.  No matter what one’s political stance may be, How to Be an Antiracist nudges the reader to explore her/his own demeanor, reactions, and responses to what is happening in our world.  Kendi’s writing flows from page to page with amazing depth, underscoring his own passion for making the world a better place for everyone.  He challenges our sense of personal ethics.

The LACPA member who recommended the book stated that she found herself looking deeply inside to explore how her own place, value system, priorities and personal boundaries relate to social justice. She began examining her own actions (or lack thereof), and what the consequences of her own individual behavior might mean.   She hopes you will appreciate this book, and find it, as she did, an inspiration to look inside to see what we can do as individuals to make our world a more just society.

Acknowledgments and Reviews:

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • Time • NPR • The Washington Post • Shelf Awareness • Library Journal • Publishers Weekly • Kirkus Reviews

“Kendi dissects why in a society where so few people consider themselves to be racist the divisions and inequalities of racism remain so prevalent. How to Be an Antiracist punctures the myths of a post-racial America, examining what racism really is—and what we should do about it.” - Time

“What do you do after you have written Stamped From the Beginning, an award-winning history of racist ideas? . . . If you’re Ibram X. Kendi, you craft another stunner of a book. . . . What emerges from these insights is the most courageous book to date on the problem of race in the Western mind, a confessional of self-examination that may, in fact, be our best chance to free ourselves from our national nightmare.” - The New York Times
