Topic: Town Hall: How Allied Professionals Can Work Together to Address Inequities in Education and Health

Location:  Via Zoom.  To receive the Zoom link, please RSVP to:   Daniel Franklin, PhD, at [email protected] or call (310) 571-1176

SIG Co-facilitators: Daniel Franklin, PhD, and Nicholas Thaler, PhD

Description:

This town hall brings together three experts from the disciplines of health, psychology, and education to discuss the ongoing inequities in these fields. Despite the rhetoric around social justice and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, marginalized communities continue to battle inequities only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, many argue that the current pandemic has only further solidified the systemic injustices in these fields.

This discussion will broach areas related to social justice in the following domains: disability and chronic illness, education and learning differences, and how the educational/mental health arena is impacted by such variables as SES and race. Other topics of discussion include an action-orientation mindset and how to use self-reflection and education as tools for creating lives and practices that center around the belief that all members of society should have equal rights and access to opportunities.

Her doctoral work at Loyola Marymount University centered on interrogating the histories of science, psychology, and education in order to better understand the inequities we have in schools today.
