Abstract:

Psychologists and clients often hold multiple and varied cultural identities, and psychologists need to attend to the intersectionality of clients’ cultural identities. These cultural identities can be sources of institutionalized barriers, and institutionalized barriers serve as the root cause of many psychological and social difficulties. Cultural identities can also be a source of strength and resilience. Understanding clients’ identities is crucial in culturally competent psychotherapy and fostering the therapeutic relationship. In this course, we will discuss the concept of intersectionality and its importance to psychotherapy practice. We will explore intersectionality and cultural identities. We will discuss the dynamics of a therapeutic relationship. We will then discuss what honoring intersectionality looks like in action through a vignette.

Alice Mills Mai is currently a doctoral student studying Counselor Education and Supervision at the University of the Cumberlands, Kentucky.
