At the conclusion of this seminar, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain the basic function of the brain-gut-microbiome axis and its role in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI).
  • Conceptualize cognitive-affective processes such as body hypervigilance and symptom-specific anxiety and identify how these may present in a patient referred for psychotherapy.
  • Formulate treatment plans that integrate psychogastroenterology principles and approaches that target both physical and mental health symptoms.
  • Discuss the role of psychological treatments in the multidisciplinary care of a person living with a chronic digestive illness in a non-stigmatizing way.
  • Implement practical tools such as CBT for IBS and gut-directed hypnotherapy into existing clinical practice.
