Category: Special Interest Groups

Welcome to LACPA’s special interest group (SIG)—CONSCIOUS AGING— for our next meeting on April 23rd at 10 AM PT via Zoom.

“View life as a series of movie frames, the ending and meaning may not be apparent until the very end of the movie, and yet, each of the hundreds of individual frames has meaning within the context of the whole movie.”– Viktor Frankl

The following description has been provided by our presenter:

Viktor Frankl, the renowned psychiatrist, founder of logotherapy, Holocaust survivor and famed author of one of the world’s most read books, Man’s Search for Meaning, taught that above all, what motivates us as human beings is the “Will to Meaning” in our lives. Meaning is unique to every one of us, every moment has its own meaning, and it is up to us to discover what that is.

Meaning in life is seminal at all ages of the life cycle, but with age, we become more aware that life moves on, that it passes quicker than we may have felt earlier on. We are not going to be here forever and change is always the master of life, what was will not be, and life calls us now more than ever to make meaningful choices, focus on values, and responsibility and prioritize what is “really important in the end.”

In this presentation, we will have the opportunity to explore how meaning is manifested in many different ways, and no less, to reflect on how meaning calls to us individually in a myriad of ways and forms. In addition, we will leave time to explore and converse in workshop fashion on a tool called “Wheel of Meaning”, which I have developed to assist reflection, action and inspiration around the cultivation of meaning as we age.

It is meaning that drives us to jump out of bed in the morning; it is meaning that inspires us to embrace our lives and seize the day. Please join us on this journey!
