LACPA’s Child and Adolescent SIG welcomes Eric Kaufmann, M.Ed., Educational Therapist / Professional What if the missing link between a student’s success is a change of environment? What if their ability to reach their full potential lies in adjusting how they feel towards learning, the community that surrounds them, and the experiences they have as they learn? As an Educational Therapist, Eric works with a wide array of adolescents and adults with ADHD, ASD, dyslexia, and auditory processing disorders. While every client is different, each individual shares a similar sentiment: school is hard, and they feel like a failure. Eric specializes in equipping neurodiverse thinkers with the tools and strategies that allow them to become independent learners and confident self-advocates. Through individualized and data-driven strategies, Eric guides his clients in overcoming their academic and personal barriers to reframe their approach to learning and help them reach their full potential. This presentation focuses on Eric’s experiences while living in a remote fishing village in Nicaragua. In Nicaragua, Eric worked for a nonprofit, NICA Fund, and developed a reading and writing remediation program for elementary-aged students. The goal of the program was twofold: get kids up to speed so that they can attend University and foster a true love of learning. Eric discovered the success of a remediation program for underprivileged youth lies less in the evidence-based approaches delivered and more in building a safe, community-driven environment. Learn what worked, what did not, and how we can leverage this experience to create powerful, longitudinal programs for underprivileged students in the Greater Los Angeles area.
