Abstract:
Nightmares are distressing and can disrupt sleep and daytime functioning. This presentation defines and describes nightmares and offers recommendations to mental health providers on how to address nightmares within their regular practice. It additionally describes specialized psychotherapy for nightmares and when to refer. 

 

Caroline Jennings, Psy.D., DBSM (she/her) is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in behavioral sleep medicine. She practices at the Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare System and has a private practice where she provides assessment and treatment of sleep issues across the lifespan throughout California. She received her PsyD from the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium. 

Katy Jakle, Psy.D., DBSM (she/her), is a licensed psychologist in private practice. She provides telehealth services for anxiety, sleep, and related concerns throughout California. Her education and training in behavioral sleep medicine occurred at the Greater Los Angeles VA System. She received her PsyD from Pepperdine University.     

Course Goals and Educational Objectives:

Attendees will be able to:

1. Describe and define nightmares, Nightmare Disorder, and distinguish from other common sleep-related concerns

2. Apply psychological interventions to help patients manage distressing dreams and improve sleep quality

3. Assess when to refer for specialized treatments and describe what treatment will entail

Course Outline:

  • Introduction of Presenters (3 min)
  • Topic Introduction and Relevance: What are nightmares, prevalence, why they’re relevant to all clinical psychologists. Discuss impact on sleep, daytime functioning, and association with suicidality (7 minutes)
  • Discuss other thoughts about how Nightmares become habits unrelated to their initial trigger and examples (8 minutes)
  • Nightmare Disorder, Comorbidity and Related Disorders: Nightmares as a sleep disorder. Discuss risk factors, other common sleep disorders that are distinguished (7 min)
  • Assessment: Assessment of Sleep, Nightmares, and Related Conditions (8 min)
  • Q&A (5 min)
  • Break (5 min)
  • Interventions to Manage Nightmares within Standard Care (17 minutes)
  • Specialty Treatment: Overview of Gold-Standard treatments and what they entail (15 min)
  • Refer: Why and when to refer, including options of where to refer (8 min)
  • Q&A for remainder, as well as contact information (10 min)
