LACPA’s Winter Book Club Selection: Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann Book Summary Killers of the Flower Moon is a gripping and chilling nonfiction account of greed, envy, and the quest for truth and justice. The Osage Nation in Oklahoma was legally awarded entitlement to the profits made from large oil deposits found on their land, and thus had become wealthy. Beginning in the early 1920s, a complex plot was created to eliminate the Osage inheritors on a one-by-one basis by any means possible. The author, David Grann, uses detailed investigative journalism to recount the history of the Osage Indians, the suppression of justice, how local justice proved ineffective, and the rise of a federal law enforcement body, namely the newly formed FBI led by J. Edgar Hoover. The result is meticulously researched, true detective story that won much acclaim, including being a finalist for the National Book Award in 2017. By the time this article is published Killers of the Flower Moon will be well-known since the film, directed by Martin Scorsese, as it will have been released months before. This book was a National Book Award Finalist (2017) and a #1 New York Times bestseller.
