Book Summary
Doris Kearns Goodwin, one of the preeminent American historians of our times, has written many highly regarded books on past presidents and the institution of the presidency. In her most recent book, An Unfinished Love Story – A Personal History of the 1960’s, she shifts her attention from individual presidents to one man, Dick Goodwin, who was the intellectual inspiration to a number of presidents and key political figures as a speechwriter, adviser, policy architect and close personal confidant. Considered by many to have been one of the most brilliant political minds of his time, Goodwin also became Doris’ husband of 42 years.
This beautifully written book tells the compelling story of how the two of them undertook a project, toward the end of Dick’s life, of sorting through his voluminous records and comparing his notes with her recollections. She was an observer who often had a different point of view on the remarkable characters and events of the 1960’s. Seeing the 60’s, a time many of us lived through, from the perspective of these two insiders was fascinating and enlightening. For those who haven’t experienced or studied this era, An Unfinished Love Story will likely be an exceptional exposure to the story of this decade.
Sample of many positive reviews on Amazon "An intimate political history....about the love of historical research, in this case demonstrated by a joint examination of 300 boxes of documents, drafts, and the personal flotsam accumulated over the course of a marriage played out in the arena of American politics. And about the love of America, its past and future, its struggles and promise"—The Boston Globe "A touching invitation to eavesdrop on a long marriage between two people who had an unusual level of access to presidential policy and personality."—San Francisco Chronicle
